Applied Research Day SummaryTime: February 19, 2009, Location: Technological InstituteKeywords: Research, graduate, ideasApplied Research Day 2009 was held on Thursday, February 19th in the Technological Institute. The event was hosted by InNUvation and planned by a 6 member committee within The Graduate School Chapter of InNUvation. There were 19 presenters, 3 speakers, and 9 judges. The speakers were Dean Julio Ottino, PhD (Dean of McCormick), Prof. Michael Marasco, MBA (Director of NU's Farley Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation), and the keynote was Dr. Charles Kuehmann, PhD (NU MSE Alumnus and CEO of QuesTek Innovations, LLC.). The judges were Jim Bray (Assistant Director of NU's Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute), Alan Hauser (Director of NU's Technology Transfer Program), Jeff Coney (NU's Director of Economic Development), Ron Kirchner (President of Heartland Angels, Inc.), Nick Arvis (Leader of Presidents Advisory Committee), Tim Lavengood (Director of The Incubator), Joseph Firca (Associate Director of NU's McCormick Office of Corporate Relations), Delara Motlagh (Research Scientist at Baxter Healthcare), and Lora Palmer (Research Scientist at Baxter Healthcare). We estimate roughly 70 attendees came to look at the posters and roughly 65 guests ended up joining us for dinner. The three winning posters were:
ARD is a poster session where students can showcase their research and demonstrate how their work can be translated into a business model. The posters are judged based on research content, business content, organization, and communication skills. Cash prizes are awarded to the top three presenters. Thank you for your interest. As part of its 2015 sustainability commitments, the Dow Chemical Company has established the Dow Sustainability Innovation Student Challenge. The Dow Challenge will award three students or student groups at Northwestern University $10,000 for their work to develop innovative approaches to meet human needs while also protecting the environment, promoting economic growth and achieving social welfare, now and into the future.
Proposed research projects should be interdisciplinary in nature, blending applied science or engineering with business thinking. Areas of interest include: Sustainable Chemistry, Energy Efficiency/Conservation, Climate Change, Life Cycle Product Safety, Human Health and the Environment, Sustainable Freshwater Supply & Distribution, Environmental Policy Development & Human Behavior Change, Sustainable Infrastructure

For more information, please visit the Institute for Sustainable Practices at http://www.sustainability.northwestern.edu or contact Professor Kimberly Gray (k-gray@northwestern.edu) or Professor Keith Harley (k-harley@northwestern.edu) International Clean Energy Business Plan Competition (ICE2009)Time: March 17, 2009, Location: East Coast, USAKeywords: Business, Energy, Green, CompetitionThe Ignite Clean Energy Business Plan Competition ("ICE"), based in new hidden object games for free Boston and headed into its fifth year, has the purpose of sparking the growing clean energy industry by encouraging and aiding entrepreneurs to develop new cleantech businesses and gain recognition and financing of such businesses. ICE provides start-up companies and entrepreneurs with: resources to develop business skills and business plans, networking opportunities with industry professionals, and a platform to attract attention of possible investors. Additionally, ICE provides the possibility of cash and in-kind awards for competition winners.
ICE 2009 begins with submission of business plans by March 17, 2009. Over the next five months competitor teams selected as semi-finalists will work with well-qualified mentors and can participate in a variety of workshops to refine their business plans and presentation. In September, 2009 finalists will be chosen by a pool of industry and venture experts. In November, 2009 all finalists will present their business plans publicly and the judges will select several winners.

Each location will have a different guest speaker(s), but a presentation of the ICE Competition will take place with networking following in order for potential competitors to meet one another and form a team for ICE 2009. Third Annual National Security Innovation CompetitionTime: Jan. 28, 2009 (deadline) May. 1, 2009 (event)Keywords: NSIC, competition, prizes, entrepreneurship, ideasThe Third Annual National Security Innovation Competition (NSIC) for college and graduate students will be sponsored by the Colorado Springs Technology Incubator (CSTI) and the Colorado Homeland Defense Alliance (CHDA) in Colorado Springs, Colorado on May 1, 2009.
NSIC 2009 is designed to stimulate interest by students in national security-related innovations and expose novel technologies to a broad audience including industry, academic, and government organizations involved in aerospace, defense, security, and first responder activities.
The competition is open to full-time undergraduate or graduate students at any college or university, including students who have graduated in the last six months. The entries must be the original idea and work product of the student/advisor team. Cash scholarship awards will be made to the top three teams in the amounts of: First Prize - $5000, Second Prize - $2500 and Third Prize - $1000. NSIC 2009 is sponsored by the Science & Technology Division of the Department of Homeland Security and hosted by MITRE Corporation's Colorado Springs office.
